Seaborough and Current Chemicals Collaborate on Groundbreaking Phosphor Solution

Seaborough and Current Chemicals have announced a partnership to advance innovative phosphor solutions, leveraging Seaborough’s cutting-edge EuroLED® nanoscale phosphor technology to deliver highly energy-efficient LED lighting. This collaboration marks a significant milestone in the development of sustainable and efficient lighting solutions.

15% More Energy-Efficient LEDs

Seaborough’s EuroLED® technology enables the use of phosphors based on nanomaterials with Eu3+ in LED lamps. These new phosphors make warm white LEDs 15% more efficient compared to LEDs using conventional phosphors. In the collaboration, Amsterdam-based lighting innovator Seaborough will optimise the materials at a laboratory scale and oversee the technology transfer. Current Chemicals will scale up the production process and become the first company to manufacture these phosphors at an industrial level.

Marie Anne van de Haar, Programme Director at Seaborough, stated: “According to the United Nations, nearly 20% of global electricity consumption and 6% of CO2 emissions are attributed to lighting. LED lighting plays a critical role in the energy transition and sustainability. Our new technology’s additional 15% efficiency boost can make a significant impact. We are delighted to have found the production capability with Current Chemicals to bring our innovation to market. Various forecasts indicate that the LED lighting market will grow by 11% annually until 2030. We believe EuroLED® can secure a substantial position in this market, both in terms of sustainability and market share.”

Professor Andries Meijerink, Professor of Solid State Chemistry at Utrecht University, added: “Europium emits red light with exceptional efficiency, but its poor absorption properties have prevented its use in LED lamps. Seaborough’s unique concept provides the solution: by coupling Europium nanoparticles with well-absorbing nanoparticles, the efficient emission of red light is combined with strong absorption of blue light. Optimising this interaction at the nanoscale is not only fascinating science but can also result in more efficient white LED lighting.”
